COMMENT:
Alexander Kovrigin, Deputy Managing Director of ASM Holding, commented:
Sales of new cars fell 64.4% in April and 9.6% in the first four months of 2020. The LCV market also declined by 42.6% last month and by 11.8% year-to-date. The pickup sales decreased by 41.1% in April and by 3.3% in four months.
Such poor market performance was due to closure of manufacturing sites and dealerships all over the country. We forecast continuing decline of the automobile market in May with a similar level of sales. In June, a return to the last year’s sales numbers can be expected.
The truck market declined in April and in the first four months of the year by 32.9% and 11.4% respectively. Truck sales were affected by the same factors as those stipulating development of the car market. The figures could also be influenced by truck sales to military and law enforcement structures which are not reported in official sales statistics. The bus market showed a fall of sales by 64.4% in April and 3.3% in January-April.
For the full year 2020, we foresee a 10%-12% decline of the car market, a 7%-8% decline of the LCV market, and a 10% decline of each truck and bus markets. However, such results are feasible in case of competent work of the Government, OEMs and dealers with implementation of the support measures for which the automotive industry is eligible. It is worth of being noted that the prices of motor vehicles in Russia in the current situation should be kept minimal, next to the cost prices, then it will help to reduce losses of the automotive industry.
